Five Years!
(My Brain Hurts a Lot!)
Oh, rah! a fool in the forest is five years old today.
In honor of the occasion, and in the spirit of self-indulgence that drives this weblog, here are four different versions of David Bowie's "Five Years," the opening song from the classic, The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.*
First up, the more or less original version, from the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test, circa 1972:
Jumping ahead some thirty years, here is how it was done on the "Reality Tour," circa 2003-2004:

Finally, we combine the worst video quality with possibly the best performance of the lot, and in a most unexpected place. No doubt severely impaired by heaven only knows what potent mixture of chemicals of unknown provenance, Bowie ventures a sterling version of "Five Years" on the Dinah Shore Show, 1975:

Bowie Banzai Bonus! Also from the Dinah Shore Show, David shows grace under pressure whilst learning a bit of the gentlemanly art of karate:
Gratuitous Gumby Goodness! I for one cannot encounter the phrase "my brain hurts" without my own brain turning promptly to this:
This fool thanks all concerned for their continuing visitation and support. Onward!

* Of academic interest: "Five Years" has been identified as the theme song for all untenured junior professors. See J. Chen, Rock ‘n’ Roll Law School, 12 CONST. COMM. 315, at 318-321 n. 250 (1995), cited in A. Long, [Insert Song Lyrics Here]: The Uses and Misuses of Popular Music Lyrics in Legal Writing, 64 Wash. & Lee L.
