A Happy Eleventy-Third to the Old Tolk
January 03, 2005
Today, as I have been reminded in several places, would mark the 113th birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien. In honor of that occasion, now that Peter Jackson's film version of The Lord of the Rings is complete, you may want to revisit the other one. No, not Ralph Bakshi's partial, animated effort: Howard Hawks' 1939 version, with screenplay by Raymond Chandler and starring Humphrey Bogart and Orson Welles. Not available in stores, the film can be downloaded here.
[Via The Tolkien Sarcasm Page at Flying Moose of Nargothrond. Links to Hawks' epic retelling were flying 'round the Net prior to the release of the first of Jackson's renditions, and this is as good an excuse as any to point it out to anyone who may have missed it then. A bit of a long download via dial-up, but pretty darned amusing.]
